Competitions Update: August 2020

If you regularly visit the Saltburn Golf Club website you may have seen that, at the SGC Executive meeting of 23rd July, it was agreed that the Men’s Club Championship for 2020 will go ahead as originally planned on Sunday 9th August 2020. The Men’s 2nd & 3rd Division Championships (Mug & Wooden Spoon) will be played on Saturday 8th August. The Ladies’ Club Championship for 2020 will take place on Thursday August 6th (Round 1) and Sunday 9th August (Round 2).

Other Men’s honours board events planned to now take place are as follows: -

  • Veterans Cup - Friday 14th August

  • Victory Cup - Sat 15th August

  • Jubilee Cup - Sat 29th August

  • Centenary Oak - Sat 5th September

The Ladies Section will also be holding various honours board events over the coming weeks, in addition to the fun competitions.

The 2020 fixture list with these items is currently being updated and will be available on the website soon.

The Ladies will also be taking part in friendly team competitions with local clubs Hunley Hall, Wilton and Cleveland Golf Clubs, and Rebecca is planning to hold her Lady Captain’s Day on 29th September (previously cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions).

Members have previously been advised of the intended introduction of the World Handicapping System (WHS). We intend to provide full details of the WHS and how it will work for SGC members in the near future. Details will be placed on the website with links provided to any additional useful sources of information.

Finally, I need to raise a couple of very important course safety issues. Despite the modified tee-time spacings that were introduced when we got back to playing after lockdown, there have been a number of recent complaints about golf balls being hit through preceding groups. Please take extra care to ensure that the preceding group of golfers are all out of range before playing your shot. The course is very dry at present and golf balls are bouncing hard and travelling considerably further distances…if in doubt wait until you are absolutely sure that the group in front are well away.

It has also been reported that there seems to be a reluctance to shout the traditional warning call of “FORE”. If you think your golf ball might travel close to another golfer or if your shot is wayward and you can’t really see whether it will constitute a risk to others on the course, better to be on the safe side and give an immediate, clear and loud shout!!

These are very important matters – please ensure that you are not placing your fellow golfers in danger – being struck by a golf ball can and has in the past caused serious injury!!
