Competitions News: May, 2019

The 2019 golf season is up and running with Men’s (white) competition tees in play and all competitions qualifying for handicap adjustment, unless otherwise stated.

The season was opened on Sunday 7th April with the matches between the Captain’s vs Vice Captain’s teams, both Mens and Ladies. Reports and results can be seen in the Captains’ section.

On Saturday 6th April, the day before the season opener, the men played a Centenary 4BBB qualifier competition during which John Gatenby recorded a hole-in-one at the 9th hole. Just a week after this, on 13th April, Tony Henderson holed out on the 18th during a McBain (medal) qualifier. To have two “aces” in such quick succession is truly remarkable and congratulations to both John and Tony on their achievements.

On Good Friday (19th April) Denise Richards, who 3yrs ago completed the Ladies’ Taster Course and is in only her second year of full membership, scored a hole-in-one on the 2nd   while playing a few holes with her partner Paul. A tremendous achievement!

On Saturday 20th April the Ladies Scratch team played the second round of the  Annodata UK Golf Club Classic. They were fortunate to be drawn at home and played against Darlington Golf Club. It was a close match and was a draw after all players had finished. As the final player, Katie Clark and her playing partner went out again to play to sudden death. They were all square at the first two holes, but Katie drove the green on the third, and birdied the hole to win the hole, her match, and the competition.  They will now progress to the third round. Extremely well done to all!

In reviewing the cards for competitions, I have noticed that a number of players (ladies included) are failing to enter their scores into the computer, or failing to return their cards. It is important that all competition scores get reviewed, so please enter your cards. This will be a topic for discussion at the next comps. meeting.

And finally, just a couple of familiar please:

·       If you cannot score on a hole pick your ball up and move on. Slow play is not acceptable.

·       Please rake bunkers and repair pitch marks.
