Men’s Captain

July was a busy month, preceded on Sunday 30th June by one of the 125th Anniversary events – the Trick Shot Day. We staged a 4-ball competition off a shot gun start during which the star of the show, David Edwards, took some video footage of the various competitors. The competition was followed by a tremendous selection of trick shots which David skilfully demonstrated. During the meal that followed David provided some hilarious commentary against the video that he took earlier and which showed all of the eccentricities of our members’ swings.

Captain’s Away Day, Friday 5th July– was at Cleveland Golf Club, where I learned to play golf and how to appreciate everything concerned with golf.  It was a great day - winner of the afternoon 18-hole stableford competition was Conal Manship. During the afternoon Stephen Wagstaff recorded a hole-in-one on the par 3 9th hole with a perfectly struck 4 iron. Unfortunately, Steve and his playing partners could not see the bottom of the flag and his achievement went unnoticed until they approached the green and realised that his ball had taken refuge at the bottom of the cup!

Saturday 13th July was Captain’s Day and started with the course being closed.  However, the mist soon cleared and 160 members and guests enjoyed a great day with sunshine, pork pies, cakes and drinks.  The competition winner was Andy Nelson, who recorded an incredible gross score of 28 (six under par) for his first nine holes. Although his back nine was not quite as good, he was a deserving winner on the day.

Saltburn Golf Club won the Langbargh Trophy Competition, which was held on Sunday 21st July.  It was a great day followed by a great evening.  The Mayor presented the trophy and it was a tremendous eve, socially what golf is all about.

Lady Captain’s Day This took place on Thursday 4th July with 59 ladies taking part. It was a beautiful day with sunshine all day. I had a tremendous amount of help from people and received several very generous gifts and cards - Thank you all. The course was in magnificent condition, the food for the half-way house was praised by all (thank-you Katie Clark for the preparation and Anne Gollogly for helping to deliver), and the waiters did a first class job. Thank you Peter and Howard. There were 64 people for the meal in the evening including some past lady captains. The meal was exceptional quality and well served. The magician seemed to be well received by all the diners, causing great bouts of laughter as he progressed around the tables. A truly memorable day many thanks to you all.

Well done to the winners.

There was a tie for the trophy on the day, with Sylvia Glendinning  & Tony Farrer and Christine Skjelhaug & Steve Evans on net 68.5.  Heather Taylor & Don Stubbs were in third place with net 70.5. After a play off later that week Sylvia and Tony were declared the winners.

Nine Hole Friday Fun Competitions.  These continue to be well supported and are a great bit of fun to start the weekend off. The July competition was held on  26th July and was won by Penni & Geoff Hughf and Carol & Tony Loughran – well done.  We all enjoyed a very tasty meal in the clubhouse afterwards with a very welcome drink (or two!) August Nine & Dine will take place on August 30th.

Strawberry Tea. Another successful event which raised £220  for Breast Cancer Care UK. Strawberries were very kindly donated by the manager of Tesco in Redcar.
